Look locally for examples

As I write, a few hours after the failure of the House of Representatives to pass the financial rescue bill, it is a bit difficult to think about local politics and government, though I wonder why, at least in South Brunswick, local government seems so much more civil than at the state or national level.
During two years living in the township, I have noted transparency in government; a governing body that listens to residents; that in general acts in the best interests of the entire township; that seems to value service over power; and that seems to function without partisan rancor.
So, although Mr. McCain, Mr. Obama, Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Boehner and all their associates have a tough road ahead, perhaps they should start looking locally for examples of behavior. We all need coolness and civility now.
