By John Tredrea, Staff Writer
Sgt. Robert DiLorenzo, a member of the Pennington Borough Police Department for nearly 12 years, has retired, it was announced at Monday night’s Borough Council meeting.
Councilman and Public Safety Director Weed Tucker said Sgt. DiLorenzo’s retirement was effective Sept. 4. On behalf of the borough, Mr. Tucker thanked Officer DiLorenzo for his service to Pennington and wished him well.
Mr. Tucker said there are five candidates to fill the vacancy on the six-officer department. Police Director William Meytrott said the vacancy is expected to be filled by the end of this month. Already filled is the vacancy created by the resignation of Patrolman Kevin Tatur, who moved to North Carolina during the summer.
Another resignation formally recognized was that of Eric Wilkinson, the borough’s representative to the Stony Brook Regional Sewerage Authority.
Two appointments to complete unexpired terms were made. Michael Townsend was appointed to the Economic Development Commission to complete a term that ends Dec. 31. Tom Adelman was appointed to the Environmental Commission to complete a term that ends Dec. 31, 2011.
In her report, Councilwoman Eileen Heinzel noted that a Green Market will be held on the grounds of The Pennington School on Oct.18 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. There will be games, exhibitions and demonstrations, all involving green, or environmentally friendly, practices.
Ms. Heinzel, who is council’s liaison to the borough library, also said the library is accepting donations of used DVDs, to be circulated among members. She added that the library needs volunteers and asked anyone interested to call Tara Russell at the library.
At the recommendation of Councilman Tom Ogren, officials agreed to make a written recommendation to Mercer County that the county continue its consideration of a proposed Hopewell-Lawrence bike trail. That the trail would run east-west, much of it along Route 546, crossing much of Hopewell Township and Pennington en route to Lawrence.
