Team remains undefeated
A rally of goals in the second half helped push Manville Recreation’s third and fourth grade soccer team to a 5-2 victory over Somerville on Saturday. The win left Manville undefeated for the season so far.
Somerville had taken an early 2-0 lead in the first half. Then, forward Aaron Schlosser put one in the net for Manville at the end of the first half to close the gap 2-1.
In the second half, Schlosser, helping the defense, kicked the ball over the midfield line to teammate Ramon Quinonez, who tied the game at 2-2.
Manville’s go-ahead goal came when Tamara Hidalgo-Cruz brought the ball out of a pack of Somerville players at the midfield line and passed to teammate Marco Ortiz. Ortiz was able to give the ball to Antonio McFadden, who maneuvered past several Somerville defenders. The McFadden goal put Manville ahead 3-2.
McFadden scored again on a pass from Vinicio Moreno. Then, Moreno scored with only a minute left to end the game at 5-2.
Manville played a strong game against a determined Somerville squad. The win was a team effort aided by Paola Fallas, Ilene Gonzalez, Steven Garcia, Madelyn Flores, Kevin Morales, Tyler Mastalski, Deven English, Jose Jimenez, Giovanni Locham, Shane Honkisz, Scarlett Simpson and Randy Fallas, who had several strong shots at goal. Goaltending was handled by Fernando Ruiz, who made some important saves throughout the game.
Manville, now 5-0, will face the Bridgewater Sun Devils on Saturday. They are expected to meet Somerville again at the end of the season in November.
