WEST AMWELL — Police are investigating a threat at South Hunterdon Regional High School that was scrawled in a bathroom stall Monday, which led to the early dismissal of students as a precaution.
The “cryptic message” in the middle school boys bathroom indicated some kind of explosion would occur, according to West Amwell Township police.
”It was non-specific,” Lt. Stephen Bartzak said.
The school’s administration called police shortly before 9 a.m. The police performed an inspection for any obvious indications of a threat while awaiting the arrival of five dogs trained to detect explosives. Neither the initial search nor the dogs turned up any threat, Lt. Bartzak said.
The students were evacuated to the bleachers on the football field. Administrators sent them home at about 11:30 a.m.
The prank is likely to cost students another day in the classroom.
”They have to make the day up,” Lt. Bartzak said. “They’re fully aware no one got away with anything.”
School administrators were in a meeting Tuesday morning and unavailable for comment.
Lambertville police, New Jersey State Police and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office assisted in the investigation.
Two of the explosive-detecting dogs were brought in by the state police. Two others came from the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office. One canine came from West Windsor Township police.
