Movie night
    Friday, Oct. 17 — Riding High Farm on Route 526 will hold a movie night from 7 to 9 p.m. in Allentown. They will show the movie “Nim’s Island” in the barn. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase. Proceeds go to support the programs at Riding High Farm. Families, Scout groups and school groups are welcome. Tour for the Cure
    Saturday, Oct. 18 — The “Tour for the Cure” will be held at the Ocean Spray Cranberries Plant, 104 Park St., Bordentown from 9 a.m to noon. Admission is $5 and all proceeds go to breast cancer research. No open-toed shoes. For any questions call Patti, 298-9181.
Flea market
    Saturday, Oct. 18 — The Friends of St. Mary’s School will hold a flea market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in St. Mary’s School and Yard, 30 Elizabeth St., Bordentown.
    Refreshments will include our famous tuna salad or egg salad sandwiches and hot dogs.
    A large selection of articles will be on sale from our many vendors. Inside tables are $10 each, outside space is $5 each. For more information, call Sally, 298-7768.
Stream cleanup
    Saturday, Oct. 18 — A Bordentown Township stream cleanup will be held at 9 a.m. at Thorntown Creek in Bossert Estates.
    Meet on Thorntown Lane by Bossert Park. Cleanup will work toward Route 130.
    Attendees will help clean up the Thorntown Creek stream corridor in Bordentown Township. Cleanup will end at about noon and participants need not remain for the full three hours.
    This event is sponsored by the Bordentown Township Environmental Commission.

CROP Walk
    Sunday, Oct. 19 — The Annual Greater Bordentown Area CROP walk will be held at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Bordentown. This is a 10K (6-mile) walk through historic Bordentown City in which walkers get pledges from sponsors to raise money to help stop world hunger. The walk will end with refreshments served at the Trinity United Methodist Church.
    This Interfaith event had participants from 10 local congregations last year and raised over $3,000. 25 percent of the money remained in our community and was given to the local food pantry located at St. Mary’s Church. 75 percent of the money was sent to Church World Service to help stop hunger in the United States and throughout the world. Many of these needy people are victims of war, drought, floods and earthquakes. Bring-a-friend
    Sunday, Oct. 19 — The First Baptist Church of Bordentown is having a Bring-A-Friend Sunday. Persons in the community are invited to Sunday School at 9 a.m. The 10:15 a.m. worship service will include a hymnsing, special music by the choir. The sermon is entitled “Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People.” A coffee hour will follow after worship. Nursery room is available for children up to first grade.
Craft fair
    Sunday, Oct. 19 — American Legion Auxiliary Unit 194 will hold a Fall Craft Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Post Home, Sixth and Broad streets. A homemade cake sale purchase will be available.

Variety show
    Sunday, Oct. 19 — A musical variety show will be held at 3 p.m. at the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Central Jersey auditorium, 103 Dunns Mill Road in Bordentown. Proceeds will benefit the six Masonic Children’s Learning Centers in New Jersey for dyslexic children. The schools are free to children who are admitted to the program. The variety show will include barbershop, opera, show tunes, comedy, pantomime and much more. There will be refreshments during the intermission and there is plenty of off-street parking. Open seating admission is $10 and can be purchased in the office from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or call to reserve tickets at 609-298-3404. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
Internet safety
    Tuesday, Oct. 21 — The Bordentown Township Police Department and Bordentown Regional School District in conjunction with the New Jersey State Police will present an Internet safety course for children and adults from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bordentown Regional High School library.
Author to speak
    Friday, Oct. 24 — Author and clinical psychologist Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore will be speaking at the Hamilton Barnes & Noble at 7 p.m. about “The 5 People Skills Every Child Needs to Learn.” The event is sponsored by the PEP/ELPAT Parent’s Group of the Bordentown Regional School District and is free to the public. There is also a book fair on Oct. 24 to benefit the PEP/ELPAT Parent’s Group, just mention the group at checkout. Please RSVP to 609-412-9248.
Oyster dinner
    Saturday, Oct. 25 — Reservations are now being accepted for the annual Hedding United Methodist Church Oyster Supper. The date is Saturday, Oct. 25 with seatings every half hour from 3 to 7 p.m. The price for adults is $21 and $10 for children 5 years to 12 years old (children under 5 are free).
    Reservations must be made in advance by calling Claudia Teal at 609-324-0729. Also the church bazaar will be held in the church basement with a variety of handmade items such as quilts, pillows, placemats, etc. and baked goods. Our famous pepper relish, which is served at the supper, will be sold at the bazaar. The church is located at the intersection of Old York Road and Hedding-Kinkora Road in Mansfield Township.
Economic program
    Saturday, Oct. 25 — Are you scared, nervous or frustrated about the current events in the market and the economy? You are not alone! The Bordentown Library will present a free program on Saturday, Oct. 25 titled: Surviving the Volatile Market. This program will be presented by Professor Ramesh Kajaria of Drexel University. Come and attend this one hour workshop to understand what is going on and ask questions that you want answers to.

Halloween party
    Saturday, Oct. 25 — Fernbrook Farms Education Center continues its family programs with a “Not-So-Scary” Halloween party on Oct. 25 and again on Saturday, Nov. 1. Starting at 7 p.m. families with children of all ages will enjoy the sights and sounds of a farm on a cool fall evening. ‘Baggage Claim’

Halloween parade
    Sunday, Oct. 26 — Preparations for the annual Bordentown City Halloween Parade have begun. The Halloween Parade will take place at 2 p.m. Oct. 26 with a rain date of Sunday, Nov. 2.
    Organizers are looking for floats, marching groups, bands, etc. to join the parade. The committee led by Steve McGowan of Consolidated Fire Association is hoping to see some of the newcomers from last year’s anniversary parade join it in creating a float for the Halloween Parade.     Halloween costume contest will take place the day of the parade in front of St Mary’s School on Elizabeth Street at 1 p.m. before the parade; no registration is required for the costume contest. Halloween House Decorating contest will take place the Saturday before the parade, more details to follow.
Wood’s Tea Company
    Sunday, Oct. 26 — Wood’s Tea Company, a Vermont-based group performing bluegrass, Celtic tunes, sea shanties and folk songs, will perform at 3 p.m. at Bordentown Regional Middle School, 50 Dunns Mill Road. Earth Talk
    Tuesday, Oct. 28 — A sreening of “Crash: A Tale of Two Species,” the National Geographic film about the unique interdependence of two NJ endangered species: the red knot and the horseshoe crab, will be held at 7 p.m. Bordentown City residents and wildlife biologists Larry Niles and Amanda Dey, stars of the film, will share their thoughts about their travels to the Jersey Shore and the Arctic to research these species.     Sunday, Nov. 2 — Bordentown Elks Post 2085 is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, and on Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Woman’s Auxilary will help by having a Holiday Bazaar. It will be held in the lower ballroom at the Elks located on 11 Amboy Road, Bordentown. Tables will be provided and will cost $30 per table.

Book discussions
    Wednesday, Nov. 12 — Book discussions are held the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Bordentown Library, East Union Street, in Bordentown City.
    On Nov. 12, “Plague of Doves” by Louise Erdrich will be up for discussion.
    In this book, a community on an Ojibwe reservation in rural North Dakota is the center of a story of redemption, murder and vengeance in the unfolding mystery of a 1911 slaughter of a farming family near the small town of Pluto. Erdrich’s narrators unravel the stories of different generations and families that finally come together in a heart-wrenching conclusion.

    Saturday, Nov. 15 — The Lend-a-Hand Society of the First Baptist Church of Bordentown, on the corner of Prince and Church streets, will hold its Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for holiday gift shopping. Trail walk
    Saturday, Nov. 15 — Join the naturalist and historian of Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park in a walk along the newly opened trail on Duck Island. Grief support
    Rainbows is an international peer support group for children and adolescents who have experienced death, divorce, separation or other family loss.

Training group
    Interested in participating in group runs throughout beautiful northern Burlington County? A training group is now forming for various fall races. Whether you’re a beginner, building a base for marathons, preparing for a race of a shorter distance, or just want some company in your quest for fitness, join the group on Saturday and Sunday mornings as they explore the roads of Mansfield, Springfield, Chesterfield and any other fields they can find. Distances will vary, and all paces will be accommodated.

Cat volunteers needed
    Bordentown City Cats has collected eight adorable kittens from different sites around the city. They are ready for their new life in a loving home. Any responsible person or family is welcome to fill out an application.

    The group is also looking for volunteers to feed, trap, provide transportation to and from vet appointments, or be available once a month for cleanup at the adoption center at an area PetSmart store.
    In addition, the group is always looking for caring people to foster friendly cats and kittens until they are ready to be put up for adoption.
Volunteers needed
    The Mansfield Township Police Department is currently recruiting volunteers for a domestic violence response team. The team members will work in conjunction with the police to provide support, information and referral at the time of a domestic violence crisis.
    Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have access to transportation, possess a valid drivers license, be willing to serve a minimum of four 12-hour shifts per month, and submit to background investigations, including fingerprinting. A 40-hour mandatory intensive training course, to be held over an eight-week period during evening and weekend hours is required and will be provided to successful applicants. An understanding of domestic violence issues is a plus, as is a bilingual capacity.

Volunteers needed
    Volunteers are needed to join the River’s Edge Domestic Violence Response Team. Participants will be called or paged by police to speak with a victim of domestic violence and provide them with options. Volunteers will receive 40 hours of initial training provided by Providence House of Burlington County.
    Volunteers must be 18 years or older and a resident of Florence, Burlington Township or Burlington City, and must have a valid N.J. drivers license, available transportation and no criminal history. They must be available for a minimum of two 12-hour shifts per month.
    Anyone interested can pick up an application at the Florence Township, Burlington Township or Burlington City police stations, or contact Patrolman Brian Boldizar at 609-499-3131.
WIC program
    The Bordentown County WIC (Women, Infants, Children) Program currently has a clinic in the Shiloh Baptist Church, Bordentown.
    The WIC is a federally funded supplemental nutrition program for pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children under 5 years old. Eligibility for the program is based on income and nutritional and/or medical risk.
