But many people may not have known about dessert pizza. This is defined as a sweet after-dinner treat made with various toppings on any kind of pizza dough.
Shanahan’s Bakery in Milltown, having added pizza to its menu recently, decided to hold a contest for the best dessert pizza recipe. The bakery received about 50 recipes, and owner Colm Shanahan then picked the best five.
After narrowing the list, Shanahan prepared the top five and on Saturday presented the desserts to a panel of judges —
Greater Media Newspapers’ Bob Noppe, attorney Todd Mayo and chef and restaurateur Alfredo DeBonis. The judges ranked their selections in order, and all agreed on No. 1. That was the strawberry chocolate dessert, made with nutella, strawberries and mascarpone cheese and entered by Ellen Wodeshick. The dessert will become a regular feature on the Shanahan’s menu, and Wodeshick received a $50 gift card. Second and third place both went to Elizabeth Cappel, who entered an apple cinnamon drizzle pie and a blueberry lemon pie. She also received gift cards.
