Daniel Hornickel, Bordentown
This letter is in response to the Letters to the Editor submitted by Jason Medina and Stephen Monson, Democratic candidates for Bordentown Township Committee, in the Oct. 2 and Oct. 9 editions.
To the editor:
Democratic Governor Jon Corzine’s approval ratings are almost as awful as those of President Bush. Gov. Corzine’s actions in cutting state aid to Bordentown (and several other area municipalities) in the amount of several hundreds of thousands of dollars has severely strapped our township budget and is the sole and direct cause for increased local taxes.
Democratic candidates Medina and Monson’s recent submissions have focused upon complaining about reception from residents, wanting to create a regulatory agency that mandates that all new development go green (without explaining how to pay for the additional policing) and videotaping public meetings.
These are not the main issues facing our township. What we the voters need to hear is how Medina and Monson are going to stand up to and convince their esteemed Democratic colleague, Gov. Corzine, to restore the municipal funding that we deserve instead of giving it away to the bottomless pits in the Abbott Districts and distressed cities.
The Republican controlled Township Committee has done a fantastic job in luring economic development opportunities to our two main corridors – Route 130 and 206. Redevelopment plans have been announced or are under way at several locations, because our town needs more commercial ratables to offset the unfair cuts in state aid from Democratic Gov. Corzine’s continued mismanagement.
While policing new construction by either encouraging (preferable) or mandating “green initiatives” is noble, as is getting township committee meetings videotaped, these are not the central concerns of voters in our town. Having a plan to respond to Gov. Corzine’s punitive cuts in local aid is what we need.
In closing, Bordentown Township does not need sympathetic, Democratic Corzine supporters (and two more attorneys nonetheless) on the Township Committee. Delaney, DiMattia and Hill are and remain the best choices for the future of our town.
