Team may play bowl game
The Manville Colts lost the first round of the playoffs to Kenilworth 14-6. This week’s captains were Altaron Robinson, Andre Heredia, Joey Veglatte, LJ Abner and Matias Gualtieri.
The offense was slow to get going both inside and outside the ends. Kenilworth came prepared for the Colts’ outside attack and the yards inside were tough to get.
Heredia, the team’s quarterback, finally saw an opportunity to sneak the ball, once for a big first down and the second time for a 31-yard gain to Kenilworth’s 2-yard line. On the next play, Robinson scored and the Colts led 6-0. The extra point attempt failed and the Colts had a 6-0 lead at the half.
A couple of Colt fumbles ended drives in the second half. Carrying the ball for the Colts was Gualtieri for 50 yards, Robinson for 30 yards and Heredia for 34 yards. Isiah Morgan made a big pass reception of 30 yards from Veglatte.
The offensive line worked hard to stop Kenilworth’s penetration. Jonathan Rizk, Mike Salvatore, Jake Babich, Marc Hagin, Jake Caswell, Nick Harenza, Angelo Locham, Sergio Mora, Darnell, Arber Berisha and Ariel Rodriguez all participated on the offensive line.
The defense had a bright spot with a fumble recovery by Mergum Berisha. Leading in tackles was Veglatte with eight, followed by Caswell and Gualtieri with five apiece. Babich also had four tackles and outside linebackers Abner and Robinson each added three.
Also seeing a little time on the defense were Ariel Rodriguez, Darnell, Harenza, Salvatore and Arber Berisha. Other starters that contributed were Hagin, Heredia and Rizk.
Over the next week, the Colts will contemplate whether or not to participate in a bowl game.
