EAST WINDSOR — A township police officer rescued from his crashed patrol car by bystanders Tuesday night was listed in good condition Wednesday.
Paramedics took Officer Paul Wille, 27, to Capital Health Systems at Fuld in Trenton after his patrol car struck a utility pole and a tree, police said.
Six bystanders pulled him from the car shortly before it burst into flames, police confirmed.
At 7:20 p.m. Mr. Wille responded to a call of an officer needing assistance with a person resisting arrest on Cedarville Road, police said. While driving to the scene with his lights and sirens on, Mr. Wille crossed from the southbound to the northbound lanes of Old York Road for “an unknown reason” and crashed.
After being rescued by the bystanders, paramedics treated him at the scene for head and neck injuries and then took him to the hospital, police said.
He remained there Wednesday, according to hospital spokesman Don MacNeill.
The accident remained under investigation Wednesday by township police and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Response Team.
