Tim Palmer, North Hanover
To the editor:
Here we are at election time again and as a resident of North Hanover Township I feel compelled to write this letter.
The current committee has taken the drastic step this year to raise our local taxes by a whopping 54 percent.
I have attended numerous town meetings these past years and brought up the subject that North Hanover should add a few pennies onto our tax rate while the economy is doing well so we would be able to have a cushion in the budget and save money for future needs such as road repaving. Each time I was told that there would be no tax increase.
Now here we are today, the economy is going down the tubes, energy prices hit record highs, people are losing jobs and investments left and right. What is North Hanover’s answer…raise taxes 54 percent.
The current Republican Township Comittee has used gimmicks and quick fixes to plug holes in previous budgets never planning for the future.
This election we have the chance to remove one of those comittee members, Lou DeLorenzo. Since Mr. DeLorenzo has been collecting approximately $12,000 a year in township funded medical benefits for his part time position, we can also put a dent in our spending.
I might also add that the other comittee members were asked if they would follow the example of neighboring Plumsted Township’s Committee and not take their salaries to help the township out. All of North Hanover’s comittee members one by one refused to decline their salary. Between DeLorenzo’s medical benefits and the four other members salaries we could have saved over $32,000!
As a resident whose history goes back almost 50 years in this township I would encourage all our residents to support Kim South.
Mr. South also has a history going back more than 50 years with North Hanover and is just the person we need to get us back on track.
