Well, it could have been much worse.
The day of our picnic, Sept. 28, turned out to be rainy.
The band, which had generously donated their time, lost their guitarist due to a broken hand. Getting the coals burning in aforementioned rain proved to be difficult.
But, thanks in large measure to the kindness of our sponsors, by any measure, the picnic was a big success!
Our first list of thank yous must include the generous wedding party who left their huge pavilion over the weekend and allowed us to use it. It meant everyone could dine, mingle and dance — yes, there was a DJ — out of the rain.
Thanks also go out to the administration of the Boat Club building.
And then there was the food; all the glorious food either cooked up by or donated by area restaurants and eateries, including: City Market in Lambertville, Giant in New Hope, Hamilton’s Grill Room, Inn of the Hawke, Lambertville Station, Mustache, ShopRite, the local chapter of the PBA, Nicola’s, Sneddon’s and Super Fresh.
All I can say about these organizations is they are fantastic community minded organizations, and if you could taste the food they prepared for free for us, you should be more than willing to pay a little bit and experience some of their taste treats yourself!
Our great thanks to the mayor, the police commissioner, police officers, members of the Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance and Rescue Squad and others who showed their support on such a dreary day.
Would we have liked to see more people? Sure, that would be great.
But the turnout was much better than expected, and it was heartening to see longtime residents sitting and chatting to newcomers.
That’s what it is all about. By being a community, we come together to help each other.
All of the people named and all the fine residents who attended showed that either by working behind the scenes or helping with the food preparation and serving to cleaning up afterwards that Lambertville is more than a place on a map; it is a community whose spirit deserves to be nurtured.
