Several nights ago a large group of Montgomery Democrats gathered at my home for a fund raiser for Montgomery Township Committee candidate Keith Hovey. We were struck by the strong endorsement speech made by Congressman Steve Rothman in support of Mr. Hovey and initially surprised with Rep. Rothman’s appearance since he represents the Ninth District, parts of Bergen, Hudson and Passaic counties, far from our location in central New Jersey. But Rep. Rothman shared a very critical and personal message that evening that spurred on Keith’s local candidacy.
As Rep. Rothman explained it, he was the first New Jersey congressional member to support Barack Obama’s presidential bid back in the primary and Mr. Hovey was co-founder and state chair for NJ for Obama which later became the official grassroots organization for the Obama campaign. They worked together — the experienced congressman mentored Mr. Hovey and together they not only made New Jersey competitive in the February primary but also registered thousands of new voters and canvassed the state delivering the Obama message of change.
As our choice for Township Committee, Mr. Hovey brings to the table a remarkable professional background. He is a trained and experienced surgical intensive care nurse who studied law and is now an attorney specializing in redevelopment. He thus brings with him on all municipal issues a unique sensitivity to people and their very real problems. He understands healthcare, he understands education, he understands open space and he knows how to encourage “clean ratables” to help reduce taxes on residential property owners. Mr. Hovey understands how government at all levels works, from federal to local, and he’s ready to work for us here in Montgomery where we need his ingenuity, resourcefulness, and high energy.
