An 18-year-old South Brunswick woman was charged with assault by auto and obstructing the administration of the law on Oct. 16 after an incident that left a 16-year-girl hospitalized.
On Oct. 14, Christine Smith, of Monmouth Junction, allegedly launched two juveniles off the trunk of a car after she hit the accelerator while they were sitting on it, injuring both, at the Monmouth Mobile Home Park on Route 1, police said.
According to police spokesman Sgt. Hugh McNeil, the victims were sitting on the trunk of a parked car that Ms. Smith was about to drive when the kids refused to get off.
Sgt. McNeil said that Ms. Smith stepped on the accelerator to knock the kids off. Both suffered injuries and the 16-year-old girl was taken to St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, and treated for a fractured skull and tailbone. The second youth was taken to the University Medical Center at Princeton and treated for a minor hand injury.
Ms. Smith was questioned by police on Oct. 14, when police say she made several false statements. She was re-interviewed and charged in the incident on Oct. 16. Ms. Smith was released on her own recognizance.
