With the current economic meltdown we are reaping the rewards of 33 years of misguided liberal efforts to do social engineering through the housing market. In 1993, in response to threats and arm twisting by liberals of both political parties, lending institutions were finally forced to accept rules for sub-prime mortgages that made disaster inevitable.
Government sponsored enterprises such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bought up huge amounts of these risky loans and paid their supporters off for increasing the volume of mortgages they were handling. When Republicans — Sen. McCain and others — attempted in 2005 to rein in these excesses, they were blocked by the Democrats. Leading the charge were Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd, Democratic Rep. Barney Frank, and an army of lobbyists paid by Fannie and Freddie to keep their punch bowl overflowing and pay off their friends. Now it is time for the taxpayers to pick up the tab, and, if Barack Obarna wins, the same liberal Democrats that caused the collapse will be put in charge of repairs. Should we put the fox in charge of hen-house security?
If we turn the nation over to Sen. Obama as president, Rep. Pulosi as speaker of the house, and Sen. Reid as Senate majority leader, we need to consider what the consequences will be. All three are from the far left whose aim is to change America from a country of free individuals and a capitalist system of free enterprise to a socialist state.
America became the greatest country in the world largely because of the individual freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights in the constitution. This freedom attracted talented people from all over the world and is a major source of our strength. The idea that anyone with a good idea, hard work, and perseverance can make a fortune is a very precious aspect of our system, unmatched anywhere else. Joe the Plumber brought this out beautifully in his question to Sen. Obama about his tax plans, and the answer he got was frightening.
Do we really want to abandon a system as successful as ours, in favor of one that has failed everywhere it has been tried? Before you pull the Democratic lever this election day, consider carefully what will happen if they win total control of our government.
