This past month, my beloved Monmouth Mobile Home Park experienced a tragedy of epic proportions. Although it was not the criminal equivalent of a drive by shooting or a home invasion it was nonetheless incredibly sad. It was incident of domestic violence that at once impacted three of the families in our park.
What occurred should not be viewed as an indictment of our community because we know from Princeton’s Lyle Menendez and brother Erik that domestic violence can occur even in the wealthiest of families.
Prior to anyone entering our park, we complete a credit report on the heads of household and a criminal background check on each resident 18 years or older. However, the family dynamic that affects the relationship between its members is rightfully outside our purview.
October is National Domestic Violence Month and I am the president of the board of directors of Women Aware, which is the domestic violence program for Middlesex County. I can tell you that our nation is in a state of denial when it comes to domestic violence and we are under staffed and underfunded. I can also say that it’s a lot easier for me to deal with the issue than it is for the agency’s executive director, Phyllis Adams, and her staff.
So, if you want to know more about the program or you wish to support us please call Ms. Adams at 732-249-4900 and mention that Arthur Roedel asked you to call.
What Monmouth Mobile Home Park needs now are your prayers and your sympathy for the families affected and the understanding that we really are a “Community of Nice People.”
