MONROE — An 82-year-old Clearbrook resident died Monday afternoon after her car hit a street sweeper and crashed into another oncoming vehicle on Perrineville Road.
Ada Marlib was traveling north on Perrineville Road at 2:39 p.m., when she tried to pass a street sweeper — also traveling north — that was half on the shoulder and half on the roadway, according to Detective Robert Bennett, spokesman for the Monroe Township Police Department.
Although the crash is still under investigation, police said they believe Ms. Marlib misjudged the distance around the sweeper as she attempted to pass it, clipping it and eventually colliding with a 2007 Ford Explorer heading south on Perrineville Road, Detective Bennett said.
As a result of the crash, Ms. Marlib’s vehicle was overturned and she was ejected a short distance from where her 2007 Saturn Aurora rested, Detective Bennett said.
Ms. Marlib died at the scene as a result of injuries she sustained during the crash, said a press release from the department.
Due to the accident, police blocked off portions of Perrineville Road for more than five hours Monday afternoon and into the evening, Detective Bennett said.
According to the press release, the driver of the street sweeper, Michael A. Vinvenzi, 46, of Toms River was not injured during the accident and refused any medical treatment.
The driver of the Ford Explorer, Seymour Behm, 72, complained of wrist pain and he and his 20-month-old grandson, a passenger in the vehicle, were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for further evaluation.
Police are asking that any witness to the accident contact Sgt. Robert Bell of the Monroe Township Traffic Safety Unit at 732-521-0222, ext. 126.
