Milestones still coming for Vikings

In what was supposed the be the calm between the storms of the county and sectional championships, South Brunswick High’s gymnastics team continued to kick up a ruckus.
The Viking varsity established – yet again this season – a school record for team points in taking a 114.175 to 114.05 win over powerful Somerville on Monday. It marked the second straight meet they re-set the standard, having done it at the Greater Middlesex Conference meet a week earlier.
Aiding the cause were not just one, but two gymnasts who broke the SBHS all-around record. Shannon Martin and Lindsay Carbone tied for second with a new standard of 38.1.
Carbone won beam (9.775), tied Martin for third on floor (9.7) and was fourth on vault (9.3) and bars (9.225). Martin was second on vault (9.45) and bars (9.4) and third on beam (9.55). Jess Macay was fourth all-around (37.975), taking second on floor (9.775) and beam (9.6), third on bars (9.3) and sixth on vault (9.3).
Also making good showings in the meet were Maddy Anand, Rebekah Clavin, Marisa Liptak, Ilana Berger, Samantha Bramm, Alex Calabro, Amanda Zimmerman and Jillian Orban.
”It was just another great performance by the girls,” coach Mindy Verderami said. “To break the school record again and have two girls set the all around record. . . wow!”
Verderami hopes to keep saying “wow” in the coming weeks.
The Vikings will now begin to see where they stand amongst state competition, as they get set for Saturday’s Central Jersey II Sectionals, 12:30 p.m., at Hillsborough High School.
In last Wednesday’s Greater Middlesex Conference Novice Championship, Amanda Klein won beam (8.1) and Jenna Mayfield won floor (8.7). Dana Vasers was second on bars (7.64) and fourth on beam (7.9), while Bramm took fifth on vault (8.225). Caitlyn Borghi and Bramm each had 8.1 on floor and Zimmerman had an 8.1 on vault.
