MANVILLE — At the request of the borough, Somerset County is working to realign the intersection of Central and South Main streets to provide safe access for drivers as they passthrough the existing traffic light at Wilhousky Street.
Once the construction is complete, Central Street will be aligned with Wilhousky Street.
According to Gary Cortelyou, construction engineer for Somerset County, Central Street is being moved over to the already existing intersection of South Main and Wilhousky streets by rebuilding about 400 feet of roadway and redoing the traffic light.
Moving the road, Mr. Cortelyou said, will make traffic safer for those living in the Weston area of town.
”We didn’t have easy access for the traffic before,” he said.
In addition, in order to move forward with the work, Mr. Cortelyou said the county purchased the house on the corner of Central Street, across from Wilhousky Street. He said the house was torn down to accommodate the realignment of the road.
”The house was in the way of the realignment,” he said. “The owner moved and the county bought it.”
The construction work, Mr. Cortelyou said, began about two weeks ago. It is expected to be finished within a month, with very little disturbance to residents in the town, and no disruption to traffic.
