Veteran Democratic Councilmen announced 2010 bid

HIGHTSTOWN — The usual after-the-polls party at Councilman Dave Schneider’s house on Wilson Street was a little subdued Tuesday night as Democratic Councilwoman-elect Isabel McGinty was out of town and unsuccessful Democratic hopeful Janice Mastriano was a no-
show.
So, Councilman Schneider and fellow Democratic Councilman Larry Quattrone decided to be the life of the party, as Mr. Schneider pulled a sign off the top of his refrigerator. Its bright-red color was a little odd, given their political affiliation and the fact that neither is apparently a Phillies fan. And the timing of its message also was out of the ordinary, but that was on purpose, said both men who were announcing their decision to seek fourth terms in 2010.
“We’re trying to change the trend. Announce early and win,” said Councilman Quattrone, who was first elected to fill an unexpired term in late 1999.
“Finding candidates is not always easy,” added Councilman Schneider, who began his tenure in 2001. “This gives us a chance to tell people that we’re willing to continue. … We want to start early and let everyone know what’s going on.”
Mr. Quattrone said his decision has no effect on his earlier declaration that he would like to be considered as a mayoral candidate should the effort to recall Mayor Bob Patten be successful.
“That’s a long way off,” he said.
The committee seeking to recall the GOP mayor has until February to get the signatures needed to get the question on a special election ballot.
Councilman Quattrone, 66, also said seeking re-election for another three-year term was an easy decision.
“Very easy. I love Hightstown and I love what I do,” he said.
