Brendan Amos joins father at fire company
MANVILLE — October, Fire Prevention Month, has a special meaning for Immaculata High School senior Brendan Amos of Manville, who now serves a probationary firefighter for the Somerset 25 Fire Station.
Two years ago, Amos joined the Station, which features a tribute to IHS Alumni and former Somerset resident John Collins’76, a firefighter who was lost on 9/11.
Amos joined his dad, Robert, who has been a firefighter for 30 years and feels that they have formed a stronger bond since they began volunteering together.
”The people at the firehouse are my other family,” Brendan said. “We are ethnically diverse and that is great, because you learn so much about other cultures and customs. Currently, I go there three days a week, doing whatever jobs are needed.”
Amos says that being at a fire can be very moving and frightening. “The adrenaline starts pumping and then all of your training comes into play. It can be nervewracking but it feels really special to help a family in need.”
Amos plans to go to Somerset County Fire Academy after graduation, while also attending college, where he plans to major in accounting. He has urged other Immaculata students to consider this way to serve the community and “I am proud to say that a few are really giving it a lot of thought.”
