Regarding my Oct. 23 letter to the editor about Lambertville’s aggressive parking and ticketing policy, I also sent a letter to the mayor, police director and Lambertville City Council members, proposing a more moderate policy for their consideration.
Doylestown has a model that encourages shopping and makes it easy for shopkeepers and tradesmen working in town to park. Meters allow an hour per quarter. Parking tickets are only $10. Metered hours stop at 6.
Aggressive ticket writing is not part of their policy. I may be a little loose with my facts here, but I like this scenario.
I further propose the meter reader and chief ticket writer be authorized to use her time to proactively lead an advance of the street sweeper in an effort to clear the street of cars. Think of the good will this would generate. This effort would also yield a better result for the street sweeper; fewer tickets but cleaner streets.
I don’t think these changes will occur just because of a few complaints. Those of us who are in support of this proposal should write the mayor, police director and City Council members all at 18 York St., Lambertville, to express our individual views and request a response once the policymakers have had time to consider the pros and cons of revising the current policy.
