The Jersey Shore Stallions, a 12U travel baseball team based out of Manalapan, won the Central Jersey Baseball Fall League championship, beating the Jersey Shore Thunder in the title game, 7-3.
The Stallions are: Nick Gugliara (centerfield/ first base), Mike Caggiano (shortstop/ pitcher), Dan Schirmacher (pitcher/ outfield), Anthony Santoro (pitcher/catcher), Dan Russo (third base), Ryan McGrane (first base), Chris Loney (catcher/outfield), Ajay Kawa (outfield), John Diana (second base/outfield), Mike LaMattina (first base/ pitcher), Thomas Pulcine (shortstop/pitcher) and James Callahan (outfield). The team is coached by manager Joe Gugliara and coaches Buster Caggiano and Bill Schirmacher.
The Stallions will look to continue to be one of the best 12U teams in the state by playing in a number of tournaments in the spring and summer, including a trip to Dreams Park in Cooperstown, N.Y., home of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Craig Forys earned All-Big 10 recognition for the second consecutive year. TheUniversity of Michigan sophomore, who was a national champion at Colts Neck High School, finished 12th at the Big 10 championships held on the University of Michigan’s home course. Forys ran the 8,000-meter course in 24:57 and was UM’s No. 4 runner. By finishing 12th, Forys was Second Team All-Big 10. He was seventh last year, grabbing the final First Team All-Big 10 certification.
Michigan, ranked ninth in the country, finished second to Wisconsin, which is ranked fifth in the nation, 40-57.
Next up for the Wolverines is the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in West Lafayette, Ind. (Purdue University) on Saturday. Forys was All-Region last fall after finishing 11th.
The Monmouth County Dodgers U-11 travel baseball team, based out of Freehold Township, won the Central Jersey Fall League. The Dodgers played in the 50/70 Division, which requires 50-foot pitchingmound distance and 70-foot bases.
The Dodgers defeated the Central Jersey Patriots, 8-5, in the championship game. They advance to the finals by beating the Central Jersey Rattlers, 6-0.
Overall, the Dodgers had a fine 20-6-1 record in the fall. They were second in the Old Bridge Fall League.
The Dodgers are: Nich LaMorte, Rob Eriksen, Nick Zuppe, Mike Triandafellos, Jason Spieler, John Carroll, Steven Rullo, Nick Ciaccia, Kyle Fenton, James Manos, Mike Messink and Tom Zufofski.
The coaches are Ed Zuppe, Frank LaMorte and Mike Messink.
CentraState Healthcare System will be holding a Sports Performance Open House for adults and children of all sports interests and levels on Nov. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 3-2 Count Athletic Training Facility at 32A Fairfield Road, Howell.
Activities will include equipment with a kettle ball, Just Jump Mat and more; squat technique training; use of batting cages and swing evaluations; and contests for base running, hitting, pitching accuracy, sports trivia challenges and more. A lecture on ACL injury prevention is scheduled for noon, and a function movement screening will be held at 1 p.m. Preregistration for any of the lectures is recommended.
