LAWRENCE: Vacancies offer opportunities for citizens to serve

By Lea Kahn, Staff Writer
Wanted — a few good volunteers to serve on Lawrence Township’s advisory boards and committees.
That’s what Township Council is seeking, as it tries to fill 30 openings on boards and committees that range from the Affordable Housing Board to the Zoning Board of Adjustment. The deadline to apply is Nov. 28.
Interested residents may apply for one of the vacancies by downloading an application from the township’s Web site at www.lawrencetwp.com, or by contacting the Municipal Clerk’s Office at 609-844-7000. The Municipal Clerk’s Office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Members will be appointed to the boards and committees by Township Council after its reorganization meeting in January.
At the Affordable Housing Board, there are five openings for three-year terms. Three of the seats are for regular members — the seats held by Paul Bannwart, Pamela C. Quagliero and Carol Tellefsen — and two are for alternate members held by Judy White and Rakesh Patel.
There are three openings on the Cable Telecommunications Advisory Committee, as the terms of Bill Michaelson and James Page expire. There is a vacancy for an unexpired term that ends in December 2009. All terms on the advisory committee are for three years.
The Construction Board of Appeals has five openings. The four-year term of Gary Michaud, a plumber alternate, is expiring. There are vacancies for other professionals, including an architect and a fire service representative. One unexpired term ends next month, and one unexpired term ends in December 2009. The other two unfilled slots expire in December 2010.
At the Health Advisory Board, there are two vacancies as the terms of Dr. Kevin McGuigan and Metta Cahill expire. The terms are for three years.
There are four openings on the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee. The terms of Colette Coolbaugh, J. David Donahue and John J. Maiorana are ending. There is an opening for an unexpired term that ends in December 2010.
The Municipal Alliance on Drug and Alcohol Abuse has three vacancies — one for an unexpired term that ends next month and two vacancies for unexpired terms that end in December 2009.
At the Open Space Advisory Committee, there are two openings as the three-year terms of Laurie Emde and John Emmons are expiring.
The Planning Board has two vacancies. The four-year term of Thomas Wilfrid is expiring next month, and there also is a vacancy for an alternate No. 2. That term, which is for two years, also expires next month.
The Recreation Advisory Committee has one vacancy for a three-year term, as the term of Jill Posluszny is ending next month.
The Route 1 Redevelopment Committee needs someone to fill the seat held by Michael Tkacs, whose three-year term is ending.
At the Senior Executive Committee, the four-year term of Bill Nemeth is ending. There also is a vacancy for an unexpired term that ends next month.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment has one opening for a regular member. The four-year term of Jane Thompson is ending.
