MILLTOWN — The results are in. Well, kind of.
At press time Tuesday, four candidates vying for two Borough Council seats were still awaiting final election numbers in a race that saw all of them wind up within 77 votes of each other.
According to Borough Clerk Mike Januszka, there are 37 provisional ballots and three military absentee ballots to be examined and counted. While the number may not seem significant, the tightness of the results among all the candidates makes it a possible game changer.
Initial results proved bipartisan, with Democrat Ron Dixon and Republican Larry Citro leading, with 1,891 and 1,834 votes, respectively. Republican Thomas Harknett came in a close third, with 1,822 votes, while Democrat Jason Farella garnered 1,814.
“Assuming I won, I’m very happy, and I’m looking forward to doing the best I can for the residents of the borough,” Citro said. “If I didn’t win, I hope whoever gets in does the best they can for the residents of the borough.”
The Middlesex County Board of Elections did not return calls regarding the status of the count, but Januszka said election officials have been working long hours to verify ballots and finalize results. According to Januszka, between 40 and 50 percent of provisional ballots are typically invalid for one reason or another.
“I don’t think there will be a different result at the end,” Farella said.
