Arthur “Dick” H. Clark

   Arthur “Dick” Horace Clark, 90, a lifelong resident of Pennington, died Nov. 12.
   Mr. Clark was a graduate of the Hopewell Township public school system. He was a self-taught landscape architect who worked for 36 years at the former Howe Nurseries in Pennington, after which he began his own landscaping business. He began his career at Howe’s as a nursery laborer and worked his way up, starting as a planting supervisor, then landscape salesman and finally, landscape designer.
   He completed landscaping courses at Cook College and enrolled in a Dale Carnegie sales course to further his career aspirations. He once taught landscaping at the local adult school and at Cook College’s evening school. He also was a volunteer at the Speakers Bureau, for which he served as a lecturer on landscaping, planting and plant care.
   Mr. Clark had the distinction of serving as the first black school board member in Hopewell Valley. He was a co-founder and first president of the Hopewell Valley Association for Equal Opportunity (AEO), an organization devoted to improving race relations in the community. He served on the Board of Directors for the Valley YMCA and was a member of the Mercer County Juvenile Justice Conference (a committee that dealt with juveniles with domestic court issues), and as a consultant/advisor on aviary construction and maintenance for Edward Marshall Boehm, the renowned bird sculptor.
   In his post-retirement years, he was a regular at Greg’s Deli, on Pennington-Washington Crossing Road, where he enjoyed the friendship of many local residents.
   He was a founding member of the Hopewell Township Babe Ruth League, and served as manager of the Lampson-Nitti Ford team for three years. He also was a volunteer organizer with the Hopewell Township Little League. He excelled in several sports in high school and was honored a few years ago as one of the first inductees into the Hopewell Valley Sports Hall of Fame.
   Youngest son of Pinky and Ballard Clark, he was predeceased by his wife, Winifred, and son Michael. He is survived by six children, Richard Clark, Ronald Clark, Judy Clark, Karen Clark, Marcia McEntyre (Michael) and Michele Jenkins (Kym); grandchildren, Richard Clark, Peyton Craig (Karin), Tracey Craig, Michael Clark. Michael Greene, Tiffany Golden, Winfred Jenkins, Abigail Jenkins, Nykeba Jackson, Michael McEntyre, Marcus McEntyre and Kimberlee Jenkins; and Grace, Jonah and Hunter, great grandchildren.
   Calling hours will bee Sunday from 3-5 p.m. and Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Blackwell Memorial Home, 21 N. Main St., Pennington.
   Funeral services will be held Monday at the Pennington United Methodist Church, 60 S. Main St., Pennington, at 11 a.m.
    Interment will be in Ewing Cemetery.
