Robert J. O’Brien, 82, of Pennington, died at the home of his daughter on Friday. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had been a resident there for 78 years before moving to Pennington four years ago.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater on the U.S.S. Duell and was involved in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was a graduate of Brooklyn College and pursued a career as an accountant working for nonprofit organizations including St. Vincent’s Home for Children in Brooklyn.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus, both in Brooklyn, as well as the U.S.S. Duell Association.
Husband of the late Clare Theresa Landy O’Brien, he is survived by four sons and their wives, Robert J. (Donna) of Valley Stream, L.I., Gerard W. (Hollis) of Brea, Calif., David F. (Alyssa) of Wayne, Stephen P.(Annette) of Holland, Pa.; three daughters and their husbands, Clare O. Doyle (Peter) of Pennington, Mary K. Gizzi (Ronald) of Waldwick, Christine T. Liubicich (James) of Glen Ellyn, Ill; a brother James (Irene) of Dunedin, Fla.; a sister Georgina Connelly (Tom) of Brooklyn; 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. James Catholic Church, 15 E. Delaware Ave., Pennington on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Friends may call at the gathering area of the church from 3-9 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, L.I., N.Y.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Home for Children.
Arrangements are by the Blackwell Memorial Home, Pennington.
