On Tuesday, Nov. 5, the fifth grade classes at MacFarland Intermediate School in Bordentown gathered together to recognize veterans and all who serve in the armed forces. Under the direction of music teacher Nancy Bender, the fifth graders saluted the flag and sang several patriotic songs. They also paid tribute to visiting veterans Master Sgt. Steven Martin, Private Alois Lohn, Captain William Leach, and James Ritz.
These veterans visited with the students and shared their experiences from their time in service, including time spent in Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. Several classes paid special tribute to the veterans by presenting a slide show, and by remembering family members who served by placing a memorial “poppy” in a “Flanders Field” mural. With song and ceremony, our veterans were honored at MacFarland Intermediate School.
Learning about and from our visiting veterans first hand was an experience that will always remain with the students, and teachers plan to continue to reach out to our servicemen and women through letters and other communication.
