HIGHTSTOWN — Robert H. Werner, 68, died Sunday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.
Born in New York City, he lived in Monmouth Junction before moving to Hightstown last year.
He was an accounting professor at Rutgers University, New Brunswick for 30 years. He was a pioneer in developing an online distance learning program at the Rutgers Business School and had been its director since its inception over10 years ago.
He was a graduate of the Wharton School of Business at The University of Pennsylvania with a degree in economics, and received his master’s degree from Seton Hall University. He also earned a master’s degree in public administration from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in public administration from New York University.
A certified public accountant and member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, he also belonged to the Association of Government Accountants, the AICPA and the Government Finance Association.
He served in the Army Reserves.
Predeceased by son David, he is survived by his wife of 29 years, Marcella Werner; daughter Deborah Freedman and husband Brian of Rockville, Md.; son Jonathan of Gainesville, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick, followed by interment at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick.
