WEST WINDSOR – An end is in sight for detour-weary motorists — the Alexander Road Bridge is expected to be open for traffic on Dec. 4.
Construction crews are currently finishing paving of the roadway and bridge, Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh said Tuesday at a press conference. Only a snowstorm or downpour rain could delay the construction.
Remaining work on the project will be completed after the bridge is opened to traffic.
Connections to roads surrounding the bridge have been closed since July 11. At that time, officials predicted the new bridge would be open in mid-October.
However, a two-month extension was announced in September, attributed to work on gas pipes that required assistance from Public Service Electric & Gas Co.
The $24 million bridge project, which is currently being constructed alongside the older span, according to Mayor Hsueh, carried traffic over the Northeast Corridor tracks for nearly 67 years.
When completed, the new bridge will feature a roundabout at the intersection of Alexander Road and North Post Road. Planners believe it will allow traffic to flow more freely, especially during peak traffic times associated with the nearby Princeton Junction train station.
