When the members of Girl Scout Junior Troop 71523 and Brownie Troop 70640 finish decorating the two Christmas trees inside the Municipal Building, they won’t look like any others in Lawrence Township.
The trees will be strung not with garlands, but with mittens, gloves and scarves — thanks to the efforts of the two Girl Scout troops.
The girls are arranging for a mitten drive to collect mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to benefit PEI Kids and Angel’s Wings Inc.
The two nonprofit agencies, which deal with children’s issues, will distribute the items to children in need of warm winter clothing. PEI Kids is located on Lawrenceville Road and Angel’s Wings is located in Hamilton Township.
But there can never be enough mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to decorate the tree — and that’s why the two troops are hoping that township residents will join them and donate the clothing items, said Annie Wilcox, co-leader of Troop 71523 with Nancy Turner. Their daughters belong to the two troops.
Township residents can put the winter wear in one box next to the main entrance to the Municipal Building facing Route 206, or a second box near the entry doors to the North Wing of the Municipal Building, next to the parking lot.
The mittens and other items can be dropped off at the Municipal Building weekdays, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., Ms. Wilcox said. The boxes are located next to the area where the two Christmas trees will be placed, she said.
The two Girl Scout troops, which belong to the Lawrence Ewing Area Girl Scouts, already have begun to collect the items, Ms. Wilcox said.
”It’s a great idea this time of year,” Ms. Wilcox said. “With the economy the way it is, if a scarf or mittens can help someone have a better day, that’s a good thing.”
