A Hun School of Princeton alumnus and three from Princeton University have been chosen to receive four of this year’s 32 Rhodes scholarships, prestigious awards that allow recipients to undertake several years of graduate studies at Oxford University in England.
The award of three of the scholarships to Princeton University students — a senior and two recent graduates — are the most to students of any one institution of higher learning in the United States this year.
The other scholar with connections to the Princeton area, Florida State University student and Hun School alumnus Myron Rolle, received the award in early November, becoming the first prominent college football player to be selected by the Rhodes Trust for the scholarship in 25 years.
Mr. Rolle lived in Galloway Township and attended Hun, located in Princeton Township. He now plays as the starting safety for the Florida State Seminoles football team. Before entering college, he was billed as the nation’s No. 1 football recruit.
Mr. Rolle completed his undergraduate degree in only 2½ years and is now working on a master’s degree in public administration. He has also been involved in medical studies, and received a $4,000 grant to pursue cancer research. He plans to enter the NFL and eventually become a doctor.
Mr. Rolle said that he had heard about Bill Bradley — a Rhodes scholar, Princeton University and New York Knicks basketball star and former U.S. Senator from New Jersey — but did not plan on applying for the scholarship when he was at Hun.
”But once I got here (Florida State) and started to realize my potential a little more in the classroom, everything started to work out,” said Mr. Rolle, who spoke to Mr. Bradley about Oxford and the interview process at one point.
The Princeton University students chosen for the scholarship include senior Stephen Hammer and two class of 2008 graduates, Scott Moore and Timothy Nunan.
Mr. Hammer, a classics major hailing from Carrolton, Texas, plans to study theology at Oxford. He is a member of Princeton University’s Army ROTC and will enter military service following his studies in England. He has volunteered at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, and is a member of the university’s Presbyterians ministry.
Mr. Moore earned certificates in Chinese language and culture and environmental studies. He studied at the Woodrow Wilson School and is fascinated by global issues. At one point he chaired the Daily Princetonian’s editorial board.
He plans to study environmental policy during what could be two or three years of study at Oxford, for each scholarship recipient.
Mr. Nunan is presently translating the writings of German jurist Carl Schmitt while studying at the University of Gottingen in Germany on a Fulbright fellowship. During his undergraduate days at Princeton, Mr. Nunan helped people understand Germany’s Nazi days, by providing translation during the screenings of Nazi-era films.
He plans to use his time at Oxford to continue his studies as he becomes a professional historian.
