Christmas tree lighting set in Jamesburg

JAMESBURG — It’s a holiday tradition that many people enjoy every year. But when it snowed last December during the borough’s annual tree-lighting ceremony, that made it even more special.

“The snow was falling down on us, and it was just wonderful,” said borough Councilwoman Barbara Carpenter. “We had about 200 people there.”

This year’s will also be unique, as organizers have planted a 20-foot tree at Veterans Park, opting to use a larger, fuller pine than those already existing at the park, as was the case in the past. The tree will be lighted and decorated at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 in the park, located behind Jamesburg Hardware, between East Railroad and West Railroad avenues.

Also at the event, the Grace M. Breckwedel Middle School Band and the Jamesburg Library Young Singers will provide holiday music from a stage donated by Middlesex County. Santa Claus will arrive by fire engine and distribute treats to the children.

Decorations will be available for youngsters to hang on the tree. Free hot chocolate and popcorn will be served.

“It’s a great opportunity to start the holiday with family, friends and neighbors,” said Carpenter, who chairs the council’s holiday events committee. “It’s a fun, happy time for children and adults to share in the holiday season.”
