YMCA honors attorney, E.B. high school senior

EAST BRUNSWICK — The Raritan Valley YMCA recently honored David Lonksi as Adult Volunteer of the Year, and Aileen Saatchi as Youth Volunteer of the Year.

The two were recognized at a New Jersey State YMCA Volunteer and Public Policy dinner.

YMCA officials said the facility on Tices Lane has undergone tremendous growth and positive changes through its volunteer and staff leadership.

Lonski, a local resident and attorney with Shamy, Shipers & Lonski, New Brunswick, has volunteered to perform legal work on behalf of the YMCA. His services dealt with the construction and opening of the YMCA facility, and officials said Lonski’s guidance and assistance was vital to the progress. He was also recognized for modeling the YMCA core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility.

Saatchi, the Youth Volunteer of the Year, has provided the YMCA with dedicated and enthusiastic service, nurturing and caring for the youth members in various child care programs, YMCA officials said. A senior at East Brunswick High School, Saatchi is a positive role model for youth at the facility, and has provided the YMCA with more than 100 hours of service.

With the completion of the YMCA’s Tices Lane facility in August 2006, the nonprofit organization has worked to renew its commitment to the community.

“Operating at the new Y has been a significant undertaking, and volunteers are the lifeblood of any nonprofit organization. To honor volunteers whom have contributed so much time is a real pleasure,” said Gina Stravic, executive director.

The YMCA needs volunteers to assist or teach youth sports and adult exercise classes, serve as after-school homework tutors, or sit on the pool building committee, program committee or finance committee. Fundraising volunteers are also sought.

High school students can also complete their required community service hours at the YMCA. Past student volunteers have helped with youth sports classes, preschool programs, special events, homework tutors, summer camp and maintenance projects.
