The Rutgers wrestling team fell to No. 9 ranked Lehigh, 27-6 at the College Ave. Gym on Saturday. In front of a nearcapacity crowd, the Scarlet Knights (11-4, 4-1 EIWA) dropped their first conference match of the season, while Lehigh (9-0, 2- 0 EIWA) won its 10th consecutive dual match, dating back to last season.
“It’s a different level right now,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “Lehigh is a better team right now. They have better wrestlers right now. That is where we want to be. It was a little disappointing, we didn’t score enough to win the bouts outside of 125 and 157-pounds, but I liked our effort. I thought we fought hard. That’s the level where we need to be. Our kids understand that and I know it will happen.”
Rutgers stayed close in each bout, including a 2-0 loss by senior Mike Whalen at 174 and a 3-2 loss by redshirt sophomore DJ Russo at the heavyweight. Freshmen Matt Fusco at 125 and Scott Winston at 157 each picked up wins for the Scarlet Knights.
“That’s why we brought those guys in,” said Goodale. “The freshmen need to be able to compete at that level and they won at a big spot. It is what we expect from them so it doesn’t surprise us, those guys will continue to win all year. We just need to get everyone on board and start winning those close matches.”
Fusco opened the contest with a 5-2 win over Mitch Berger. But Lehigh won the next three bouts, as redshirt freshman Brian Bollette, redshirt sophomore David Greenwald and freshman David Seidenberg all fell to their opponents. Winston then stopped the losing streak with a 9-6 victory over Sean Bilodeau.
But Lehigh proved to be too much down the stretch, winning out to claim the victory. Senior Matt Pletcher lost 10-3 at 165 to No. 17 Mike Galante, followed by Whalen’s two-point loss. Redshirt freshman Chris Orzechowski and redshirt junior Karim Mahmoud lost their 184 and 197-pound matches, and 1:16 of riding time gave the heavyweight bout to Lehigh’s Zach Rey.
Rutgers returns to the mat on Dec. 29 in the Midlands Tournament in Evanston, Ill.
Former Rutgers soccer standout Carli Lloyd was selected as the US Soccer Female Athlete of the Year, the organization announced Friday. Lloyd scored the gamewinning goal in Team USA’s 1-0 gold medal win over Brazil in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
Lloyd is the first midfielder to win the award since Shannon MacMillan in 2002. The Delran native had a banner year for the national team, recording nine goals and nine assists, both career-highs. In the United States’ run to the gold medal, she started all six games and played every minute of the tournament.
Online votes accounted for 50 percent of the total, while the other half came from members of the national media and US Soccer representatives, including national team coaches and the members of the US Soccer Board of Directors.
As a Scarlet Knight, Lloyd helped Rutgers earn four Big East Tournament berths and two trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a Sweet Sixteen finish in 2001. She was the first RU player to earn first-team all-Big East honors four times (2001-04), and in 2004 was named the Big East Conference Midfielder of the Year as well as being named to the SoccerbuzzAll America Second Team, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic Region All-Third Team and the Soccerbuzz Mid-Atlantic Region First Team.
She finished her career at Rutgers as the all-time leader in points (117) and goals (50). The four-time All-American also was a finalist for the 2004 Soccerbuzz National Player-of-the-Year Award, and was named a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy, the official NSCAA national player-of-the-year award. Rutgers women’s soccer retired Lloyd’s No. 10 jersey before its game against Villanova on Sept. 22, 2008.
Lloyd earned her first invitation to the Women’s National Team camp during the summer of 2004, joining Team USA at its Olympic Residency Camp three times. Her first start for the WNT came on March 11, 2006, and she scored her first goal on Oct. 1 against Chinese Taipei. Lloyd played with Team USA in the 2007 Women’s World Cup and has 73 caps and 19 goals under her belt.
