Marlboro High School’s Chelsea Unger has signed her national letter of intent to join the Marist University women’s swimming team. Marist coach Larry Van- Wagner said that the Marlboro senior is one of the two fastest breaststrokers ever recruited by the Red Foxes.
Unger is the reigning Monmouth County and Shore Conference champion in the 100- yard breaststroke. She swims every discipline for the Mustangs in dual meets. Unger also competes for the Western Monmouth County YMCA team, where she was a state and national championship qualifier. She coaches the YMCA’s summer swim team and the Monmouth Marlins Special Olympics Team.
Manalapan’s Lauren Uckar, a freshman at Montclair State University, was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. She helped the Red Hawks women defeat Drew, 101-77.
Uckar won the 200 freestyle (2:09.65) and swam the opening leg on MSU’s victorious 400-medley relay team (4:24.89).
Uckar is a graduate of Manalapan High School.
The Ice-Lantic Synchronized Skating Team won the silver medal at the intermediate level at the Terry Conners Synchronized Skating Classic in Stamford, Conn. The Garden State Skating Club’s Ice-Lantics team is made up of Freehold area skaters.
Team members are: Amanda Collins, Alex Rosen and Jenna Kaufman-Ross, Freehold Township High School; Alex Scarpulla, Manalapan Englishtown Middle School; Gianna Santaniello, Barkalow Middle School; Jaclene Forlanao, Englishtown who attends, the Biotechnology High School; and Jaci Gurgone, Marlboro High School.
The coaches of the Ice-Lantics are Lynee Leger and Konstantin Kaplan of Marlboro, assisted by Kaitlyn Buffone, Freehold.
The Pinelanders Youth Soccer Club, Howell, is now accepting registrations for the spring 2009 recreational soccer season. Registration is open to boys and girls who will be aged 4-18 on April 1, 2009. Birth certificates are required at registration. Girls ages 5-18 can choose all-girl or co-ed soccer and the fee is $45 per play with a $90 maximum per family. An additional $10 late fee will be charged for registrations received after Feb. 8. There are no residency requirements.
Players can register now at www.pinelanders.com or go to a registration session at the Howell Middle School North, Squankum Yellowbrook Road on Jan. 16 from 7-9 p.m. Use the gym entrance at the back of the school and players must bring their birth certificate.
