Chesterfield School District finally has broken ground on its new elementary school building, approved by a voter referendum last year.
A ceremony began at the existing school on Bordentown-Chesterfield Road on Saturday. After a brief reception, participants traveled to an area near the new school site at 22 Saddle Way for the actual groundbreaking.
The new building will hold up to 900 students, something school officials said would be needed due to population growth projection.
The school will be in the new part of Old York Village and available to the community year-round for athletics, meetings and community events.
In addition, all administrative operations will be housed within the building, which is expected to open in 2010.
Voters approved the $37 million school 669-594 in December 2007.
