In an effort to bring more seniors to the newly opened activity center, the Hillsborough Senior Citizens Chapter A is sponsoring an open house to show residents the new space.
The social event will be held from about 10 a.m. until about 2 p.m. Jan. 21 in the Senior Activity Center in the municipal building, on South Branch Road.
”We are trying to get people together,” said Dick Meier, president of Chapter A. “We want all the seniors in the community to get acquainted with each other.”
Mr. Meier said the timing for the event is mostly just an estimate because the activity center is for only the seniors anyway, and they can spend as much time in the space as they choose.
According to Mr. Meier, the purpose of the open house is to introduce residents to the center and show them the different opportunities for senior citizens, with the hope that more will decide to meet there.
The event will also feature homemade goods from close to 40 of the members of Chapter A who have volunteered to help during the open house.
The Senior Citizens Chapter B, Mr. Meier said, will be at the event as well.
”We are promoting the social for any senior citizen in the community,” he said.
The center, which opened in October, was built in a 3,000-square-foot storage room in the municipal building, and includes a 537-square-foot game room, a 415-square-foot computer room and a 1,758-square-foot main room.
Both Chapters A and B are currently looking into adding new amenities to the center, including shuffleboard tables, card tables, decorations and other equipment. In the future, they are hoping to hold shuffleboard tournaments, and have computer and bridge classes, among other activities.
