State Theatre presents the 3rd Annual
HUB CITY CARNIVALE
A Festival of the Imagination at Play

New Brunswick, NJ (January 15, 2009)—New Brunswick’s State Theatre is proud to present the 3rd annual Hub City Carnivale. A four-week winter festival of the imagination at play, February 2 – 27, with performances, workshops, parties, and more, for families and kids ages 1 to 100. Partners and event sponsors include AM Productions, American Repertory Ballet, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Forward Air, George Street Playhouse, and Rutgers Student Life.
The month kicks off with a one week residency and performance by STREB Extreme Action (2/2 -2/6/09) in their new showSTREB: Invisible Forces, which is a combination of extreme sports, stunt work, dance, and gymnastics.
Hub City Carnivale highlights include performances byRenée Taylor and Joe Bologna in the laugh out loud comedy, If You Ever Leave Me…I’m Going With You (2/8/09)500 Clown in an unpredictable and audience interactive performance of Frankenstein, (2/10-2/14/09); the Broadway musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone (2/13-2/14/09)Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s production of Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny (2/16/09); the U.S. premiere of DrumLine Live (2/19-2/20/09)Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra (2/21/09)Opera New Jersey in a matinee concert-staged production of Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus (2/22/09). Closing the festival will be a special performance by The Pendragons Magical Theatre Company (2/27/09), complete with free cake for all Pendragons’ ticket holders!
Once again during the Hub City Carnivale, President’s Day (2/16) is Family Day at the State Theatre with a nonstop schedule of both free and paid activities at the State Theatre, George Street Playhouse, Crossroads Theatre, and United Methodist Church from 10am to 4pm. Family Day is geared to children ages 3+ and their families. The featured event is Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s production of Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunnyat the State Theatre at 10:30am and 1pm. Three performances will take place at Crossroads Theatre including the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus at 10am and 12pm and American Repertory Ballet’s Jump, Frog, Jump! at 2pm.
A variety of hands-on workshops take place throughout the day including three sessions at Crossroads Theatre led by American Repertory Ballet (ARB)—“Hop to It” (11:30am) and “Hand-in Hand” (10pm & 1pm) and three arts & crafts workshops (10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm)“Making Character Masks” (10:30am & 2pm), and “Rabbits at Play” (12:30pm) led by George Street Playhouse and one at the State Theatre—“Join the Circus” with Bindlestiff Family Cirkus (2:30pm). All workshops are $5 and can be purchased by calling the ticket office at 732-246-SHOW or online at www.StateTheatreNJ.orgAdditionally, this year the United Methodist Church has been added as a location for FREE Family Day events including sing-a-longs with singer/guitarist Big Jeff (10:15am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm) and storyteller Lisa Garwood (11:30am & 1:30pm). Adding to the festival atmosphere is the Hub City Big Top, set up on Livingston Avenue in front of the State Theatre. Under the Big Top families can enjoy food, FREE face painting and balloon animals, live characters from popular children’s shows, Radio Disney’s DJ Mickey, and more. .
