SAYREVILLE — Several residents reported hearing two gunshots and seeing a suspect flee the scene of a borough apartment complex recently.
Police were called to Skytop Gardens Apartments at 2:15 p.m. Jan. 13 regarding the gunfire reports. No one was harmed in the incident, and police reported finding no property damaged by gunfire at the apartment complex, located off Ernston Road.
Police recovered two shell casings in the area of Building 13, but officers were unable to locate the shooter after dispatchers advised them of his physical description. Witnesses reported seeing a possible suspect with a tan complexion, wearing a black hat, gray sweatpants and a black, hooded sweatshirt with white writing on it.
Witnesses reported that the male suspect was smiling as he left the complex on foot, headed toward London Terrace Apartments in Old Bridge. He was not recognized as a resident of Skytop Gardens.
Skytop Gardens was the scene of a drive-by shooting that injured two Sayreville teenagers on Oct. 24. Police made six arrests in connection with that incident.
Borough officials are looking to pass an ordinance requiring landlords to hire unarmed security guards for the town’s larger complexes, such as Skytop Gardens and Winding Wood apartments. The ordinance was drafted after the fatal shooting of a 20- year-old man at Winding Wood, off Bordentown Avenue, in 2007.
Police are asking anyone with information about the Jan. 13 incident at Skytop Gardens to call Detective Robert Bruce of the Sayreville Police Department at 732- 525-5432.
