Camplain Volunteer Fire Company no. 2 is sponsoring a fundraising bus trip to the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races at Darlington Raceway. The trip will depart Manville on May 7, returning on May 10th. The trip includes roundtrip motorcoach transportation from Manville; one night lodging at the Hampton Inn in Fredericksburg, Va.; two nights lodging at the Hampton Inn in Fayetteville, N.C.; transportation to and from the race track and race tickets. Manville Youth Athletic League registration for the spring season at Gerber Field will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 4, Feb. 6, Feb. 11 and Feb. 13; and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 14.
Any youths who will be 7–15 years old on April 30, or 6-years-old by July 31, living in or attending school in Manville is eligible. To register, bring a copy of birth certificate; registration fee of $65 check or cash (plus $15 for each additional child); $24 cash or check for the candy fundraiser; and a $100 work bond check posted dated July 31, 2009 (returned after the season is over and the bond is fulfilled.) Reunion plans for Manville High School 1959 classmates. Plans are underway to celebrate a 50th class reunion in 2009. Organizers are in the process of trying to locate and contact all class members. The Spartan Club of Immaculata High School is currently seeking goods, services and/or monetary donations for the Mothers’ Auction held during its annual Fashion Show Luncheon, scheduled for April 4 at the Doubletree Hotel in Somerset. The Somerset 4-H Trainmasters Club 2009 Model Train Exhibition will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Ted Blum 4-H Center of Somerset County, 310 Milltown Road, Bridgwater. Admission is $3 per adult and $1 per child (children under 12). The Somerset 4-H Trainmasters is a club whose members range in age from the fourth-grade to one year out of high school who build and operate an o-gauge modular model railroad. Their objective is to learn teamwork while mastering the skills and techniques of model railroading.

The Somerville Knight of Columbus will sponsor a free throw contest for boys and girls age 10-14 at Immaculata High School. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. Winner swill advance to a district competition in February. Entry forms will be available at registration; participants must provide proof of age (birth certificates are best) and written parental consent.

The Hungry Readers Book Club will host an appearance by author Cynthia Chapman Willis at the Manville Public Library at noon. The Manville Public Library Board of Trustees will meet at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the library at 100 S. 10th Ave. Meetings are open to the public.

Looking ahead
St. Ann School in Raritan will host a Valentine’s Day dance in the school cafeteria at 45 Anderson St. in Raritan from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Feb. 7. Tickets are $25 per person, and proceeds from the event will benefit a project to install handicap-accessible bathrooms in the church. No one under 18 admitted. Tickets include Hors d’ oeuvres, dessert, a DJ and free Arthur Murray dance lessons. For more information, call the church at 908-725-1008.
The Manville High School PTSA will host a Valentine’s Day dinner and dance at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post to benefit Project Graduation, an event providing a drug and alcohol-free graduation celebration for graduating high school seniors. Tickets are $45 per couple, or $25 for singles, which includes a buffet dinner, dancing, and DJ music.
