HILLSBOROUGH: Wrestlers make history again

RAIDER ROUNDUP

by Rudy Brandl, Sports Editor
The Hillsborough High wrestling team’s historic season continued with another school record achievement.
Saturday, in a tri-meet with Pingry and Bernards, the Raiders swept to improve their record to 19-4, which represents a new record total for most wins in a season. Hillsborough routed Pingry (82-0) and Bernards (50-22) to add another milestone to its 2008-2009 season resume.
”It’s a real nice feeling for the kids to be a part of it,” Raider head coach Steve Molinaro said. “We still have quite a few young kids and that’s always encouraging. I’m still seeing many things we have to do better. We can’t rest on our laurels. We have to peak at the right time.”
Hillsborough nearly put up the maximum point total in beating Pingry. The team collected pins by Joey DiCarlo (103), Mackey Price (112), TJ Guidice (119), Mike Caver (130), Kyle Yurcisin (135), Will Goddiess (152), Jared Leon (160) and Brian Biglin (189).
Issac Muck (140) won by major decision and Matt McLaughlin (125), Nick Detsis (145), George Goddiess (171), Max Borisenko (215) and Chris Rossi (Hwt) won by forfeit.
HHS won 10 of 14 bouts vs. Bernards to complete the sweep. Guidice notched his second pin of the day, while teammates Detsis and Borisenko also posted falls. Other HHS victories included decisions by McLaughlin and Rossi, a major by Muck, tech falls by Will Goddiess and Leon and forfeits to DiCarlo and Price.
The Raiders were coming off a tough 36-23 loss at Hunterdon Central in last Thursday’s highly anticipated dual meet. Hillsborough won five bouts against a team it could meet in the upcoming Central Jersey Group 4 playoffs.
Hillsborough fared well in the low and high weights but got hammered in the middle. DiCarlo and Guidice registered falls and McLaughlin added a decision down low and George Goddiess (decision) and Borisenko (pin) prevailed up top. Central won bouts at the seven weights between 130 and 171.
Hillsborough is scheduled to host Notre Dame and Roxbury in regular season action this week to tune up for Monday’s CJ 4 quarterfinal match.
Swimmers soar
at relay meet
Many of Hillsborough’s younger, less experienced swimmers enjoyed a chance to compete at Montgomery High’s pool in last Friday’s Cougar Relays.
Matthew Temple and Jessica Walton each finished third in their respective 500 freestyle races to lead the teams. Temple hit the wall in 6:12.87, while Walton finished in 6:19.62.
Three HHS girls placed in the top seven of the 500 free. Walton was followed by teammates Emily Stoto (6th, 6:39.44) and Rhiana Gademsky (7th, 6:46.36).
Other Hillsborough swimmers placing in the top 10 included Brandon Skrobot in the 50 free (5th, 25.91) and 100 back (3rd, 1:07.42), Kevin Wander in the 50 free (7th, 26.08) and 100 free (9th, 59.33), Joe Mehrtens in the 100 breast (10th, 1:17.73), Katherine Moore in the 50 free (8th, 29.61) and 100 fly (10th, 1:24.41), Sarah Wilson in the 50 free (10th, 29.82), Katherine Huereca in the 100 fly (8th, 1:05.35), Stoto in the 100 back (6th, 1:15.59) and Amy Chen in the 100 breast (4th, 1:24.59).
The 200 free relay team of Wilson, Gademsky, Jenna Scillitani and Walton finished fourth in 2:02.15. Huereca, Moore, Stoto and Gademsky combined for fifth in the 400 free relay (4:28.66).
The HHS boys will be out to avenge their recent one-point loss to rival Bridgewater-Raritan in the Somerset County meet in Thursday’s Skyland Conference Championships, while the girls will compete in the conference meet Friday.
Both events will be held at Montgomery.
