United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement were investigating a potential “human smuggling” case after a car-full of Mexicans was stopped on Route 195 at 11:08 a.m. Jan. 30, Detective Pete Galazka said.
Detective Galazka said none of the seven passengers had valid licenses and later admitted they had paid “several thousands dollars” to be illegally taken over the border to Union City for employment. Five were male and two were female, police said, and while ages are not yet clear, three are potentially juveniles. They were being held by ICE, as the investigation was ongoing.
Jennifer Wojcao, 28, of Hadley Drive, was charged with driving while intoxicated Jan. 31. Police said Ms. Wojcao drove off the road in the area of Ambleside Drive and Sudbury Street, crashed through fences and damaged four properties on Faxon Drive. The accident caused an estimated $10,000 in damages, police said. The woman was conscious at the scene, but taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, according to police. She also was charged with reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane, failure to exhibit insurance and driving while uninsured.
Police were investigating a burglary that took place Monday on Vahlsing Way. Police said someone smashed through a rear garage door, entered the master bedroom and stole $5,000 worth of coins and jewelry between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Electronics in the home were not taken, according to police. Detective Pete Galazka said similar incidents have occurred in Bordentown and East Windsor, but police are not yet sure if they are related.
Police were investigating a motor vehicle theft that took place at a Route 130 residence between Jan. 24 and 28. A white, 1983 Ford pickup truck valued at $800 was reported stolen.
Corey Hopkins, 19, of Hamilton Square, and Enzo Nini, 38, of Hamilton, were taken to hospitals Tuesday after a head-on collision on Route 526 near Richardson Road. Police said Mr. Hopkins crossed over into the opposite lane, hitting Mr. Nini’s car and bouncing 100 yards away. Mr. Nini drove into a utility police, police said.
Mr. Hopkins, who was unconscious after the accident, was taken to Capital Health Helene Fuld Campus Trauma Center and was recovering as of press time, police said. Mr. Nini was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital with a broken nose and was released that day, police said. No charged were filed as of Tuesday, as an investigation continued.
