MONROE — Not only has the library physically grown from just a few shelves housed in the municipal building’s basement, but its popularity has soared climaxed over the years as well, as was demonstrated by the approximately 600 residents who attended its newly renovated Municipal Plaza building’s grand unveiling, Saturday.
The cost of the project, which expanded the library from 20,000 to 40,000 square feet, was approximately $7.5 million.
Where scaffolding once stood and hard hats once frequented, the library’s exterior now includes a drive-through window, one of the most popular additions as an easy option for patrons who want to pick up and drop off their books and videos.
As for the interior, the library has added areas for both children and adults.
Upon entering the children’s area, one is struck by the whimsical colors and themes, circular architecture and mounds of books, as well as the occasional bean bag or play station scattered amongst the shelves.
”We’re going to keep adding things,” said Irene Goldberg, director of the library. “I didn’t want it to be passive. I wanted it to be interactive. I wanted the children to come in and just use their minds. We want to encourage that exuberance — that love of everything new and exciting is just so fresh.”
As for the adult section, some might have noticed the widely spaced shelves, the plush new seating or the back café, but the biggest, standout addition would have to be the new fine arts gallery.
Mimicking the circular architecture of the children’s section, the room’s walls are lined with the brilliant paintings of local artist Nancie Gunkelman, whose work depicts her experiences abroad in Africa.
”Many of our patrons appreciate the fine arts and they love coming in and looking at the paintings,” Ms. Goldberg said. “Our patrons are very cultured, diverse and well-educated — so we knew there would be interest.”
Each exhibit will be changed quarterly and this spring the library board will be searching for a year’s worth of new artists to feature in the gallery, she said.
