Bill and Nancy Schluter, both former Borough Council members and longtime Pennington residents, attended Monday night’s meeting to thank the Pennington Fire Company, police and residents for their help during a Jan, 24 blaze that caused serious damage to their 205 S. Main St. home.
Mr. Schluter also is a former state assemblyman and senator.
”We want to express our great gratitude to the fire department and police for the wonderful job they did responding to the fire, and to the literally hundreds of people who have expressed sympathy to us for the damage done to our home. It’s a wonderful town to live in,” Ms. Schluter said.
”What the town did for us was very gratifying. During the fire, the mayor was there, Councilman (Weed) Tucker was there. Police Officer Novin Thomas and the fire department did a great job,” she added.
Many members of the borough’s fire company were at the station house on Broemel Place, taking a class on firefighting, when the alarm for the Schluter fire came in, shortly after 10:30 a.m.
”The fire department was at the Schluters’ almost immediately,” Mr. Tucker said.
Officials said the fire was started accidentally by a defective lamp cord in the first-floor living room of the three-story, imposing, red brick residence.
Fire damage was confined to the living room. There was some smoke and water damage to adjacent rooms.
”The fire department did a great job containing the fire as much as they did,” police Director Bill Meytrott said.
