By American Bar Association
Richard Pompelio has been selected to receive the American Bar Association National Criminal Justice Frank Carrington Crime Victim Attorney Award.  The award is bestowed on attorneys or legal service providers (including organizations) who have either directly represented specific victims in criminal, juvenile, or appellate courts or who have worked to promote or implement policies to improve the treatment of crime victims in the criminal justice system. In selecting Richard for this award, the ABA referred to his 20 years of dedicated service to the cause of victims’ rights, including the following:
1.      Richard’s contributions to improve the rights of crime victims in the system during his 20 year career as a victims’ rights lawyer;
2.      His contribution of outstanding legal scholarship or legal advocacy to improve the rights of crime victims in the system;
3.      His substantial efforts in the area of pro bono legal advocacy; and
4.      His role as a national leader in the advancement of the rights of crime victims in the system.
The formal award presentation will be made to Richard on February 13 at the Midyear meeting of the ABA in Boston.
Richard Pompelio established the New Jersey Crime Victims’ Law Center in 1992 as the first nonprofit organization in the country to provide pro bono legal services in the criminal justice system for victims of violent crime. There are now eight others nationally who have followed the Victims’ Law Center and work with it on victims’ rights issues.
 The Victims’ Law Center is recognized nationally for its work, and along with his partners David Gray and Paul Forman, Richard represents victims throughout the State of New Jersey and lectures nationally on issues involving victims’ rights.
