YOUTH BASKETBALL
The St. Joseph’s seventh and eighth grade girls’ basketball Team Ivone has won six games so far this season. Here’s a game-by-game recap:
St. Joe’s 20, OLMV 19 The girls opened the season with a nail biter over Our Lady of Mount Virgin. Erin Mershon hit the game-winner with 10 seconds left for a one-point victory. The defense was led by Erika Cavallo and Allison Corchado. The leading scorers were Alison Calamoneri (6) and Nicole Rossi (4). Chipping in with two points each were Melissa Bijas, Corchado, Cavallo and Carissa Otrimski.
St. Joe’s 40, Sacred Heart 26 This game was just the opposite from the season opener as the offense absolutely exploded for 40 points and a 14-point margin of victory. This time the offense was led by Nicole Rossi (19), Alison Calamoneri (9) and Erika Cavallo (5). Erin Mershon added another three points and Melissa Bijas and Sojourner Mineo rounded out the scoring with two points each. The defense controlled the boards with Sydney Luceno, Kaitlyn Irwin and Allison Corchado, who led the team in rebounds. The stingy defense held Sacred Heart to only eight points in the first half.
St. Joe’s 38, St. Helena’s 13 Once again solid defense and a strong offensive show led St. Joe’s to their third straight victory. Erika Cavallo led all scorers with 12 points, followed by Nicole Rossi (6) and Kristen Emmerson (4). Also contributing with two points each were Alison Calamoneri, Sojourner Mineo and Kaitlyn Irwin. Allison Corchado again controlled the boards.
St. Joe’s 26, IC Clinton 23 In another close game, the defense came up big to stop IC Clinton fourth quarter assault, giving St. Joe’s its fourth win of the season. The defense was led by Kristen Emmerson, who had several steals. Kaitlyn Irwin led the way in rebounds and chipped in a foul shot. Sydney Luceno and Alison Calamoneri were all over the court. The offense was led by Erika Cavallo (9), Carissa Otrimski (8) and Nicole Rossi (4). Rounding out the scoring was Allison Corchado and Sojourner Mineo with two points each.
St. Joe’s 35, OLMV 23 In their best all around game, the St. Joe’s girls earned their fifth victory by defeating a strong OLMV team for the second time this season. Kaitlyn Irwin, Kristen Emmerson, Sydney Luceno and Carissa Otrimski played solid defense, controlling the boards. The offense was led by Erika Cavallo (10), Nicole Rossi (8), Erin Mershon (4) and Allison Corchado (4). Also chipping in were Sojourner Mineo (3) and Melissa Bijas (2). Allison Corchado turned in a complete game with several rebounds, steals and four points.
St. Joe’s 39, Sacred Heart 31 Erika Cavallo scored 10 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Nicole Rossi led all scorers with 16 points. Allison Corchado, who played tough defense, added four points. Kristen Emmerson, Sojourner Mineo and Carissa Otrimski chipped in with two points apiece. Erin Mershon rounded out the scoring with a foul shot. Rebounding became key in the fourth quarter, when Sydney Luceno, Kaitlyn Irwin and Melissa Bijas took control. The defense was led by Alison Calamoneri, who was all over the court.
