NORTHERN BURLINGTON: County plans construction projects

The county is planning to undertake a construction project at a cost of over $25 million to improve road and bridge safety.
The Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders reviewed County Engineer R. Thomas Jaggard’s plan this week, according to a press release.
Of the $25.25 million cost, $10.5 million would be sought through federal funds, about $5.5 million in state funds, $3 million in previous county bond funds, and about $6.2 million in new county bond funds. The county has applied for $8 million in Federal Stimulus Funding for part of the project.
“This year’s Plan is an aggressive list of projects that addresses safety and continuing to maintain our valuable infrastructure of highways and bridges while taking advantage of federal funding,” said Freeholder Director Joseph B. Donnelly.
Locally, four towns would be included in the road-resurfacing project. Using state and county funds, the county would work on a total of 18.7 miles in 12 municipalities.
The targeted roads in the area are 0.9 miles of Hedding-Kinkora Road (Route 678) between Route 130 and Old York Road (Route 660) in Mansfield, and 4.9 miles of Burlington-Jacksonville Road (Route 670) between Route 130 and Hedding-Jacksonville Road (Route 628) through Burlington City, Burlington Township and Springfield.
The plan also aims to repave 11.9 miles of road in three municipalities through $2.5 in Federal Stimulus Funding. That would include 5.2 miles of Old York Road (Route 660) from Columbus Road (Route 543) to Hedding-Kinkora Road (Route 678) in Florence and Mansfield, and from Bordentown-Georgetown Road (Route 545) to Routeosswicks-Chesterfield Road (Route 677) in Chesterfield. It would also cover 2.1 miles of Jacksonville-Hedding Road (Route 628) from Old York Road (Route 660) to Columbus Road (Route 543) in Mansfield.
Other elements of the county’s plan include bridge and culvert projects, traffic signal upgrade and coordination, road restriping, and guiderail replacement.
A resolution to authorize the plan’s funding will be part of the freeholders’ public agenda Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Mount Holly.
