MARLBORO — Commuters who park in Marlboro’s parking lots near Route 9 may see an increase in the annual fee they must pay for a parking permit. The Township Council has introduced an ordinance which would, if adopted, increase the annual fee from $120 to $150.
The ordinance was introduced at the council’s Jan. 22 meeting.
According to the ordinance, a pro rated amount of $12.50 per month would be charged for commuters who seek a permit after April 1. A permit holder who no longer resides in Marlboro or Manalapan during the course of the permit year must surrender his parking permit. Such an individual would be able to apply for a pro-rated refund for the remainder of the permit year upon surrendering the tag. For anyone who loses a parking permit, a $25 replacement fee will be imposed.
The new commuter parking fees are expected to have a second reading, public hearing and vote for adoption at the council’s Feb. 12 meeting.
An ordinance to eliminate parking along both sides of Willow Lane was also introduced during the Jan. 22 council meeting.
Marlboro Police Department Sgt. Joseph Lenge contacted the council to alert the governing body about the parking issues at Willow Lane near the street’s intersection with Route 9 north.
According to a copy of the e-mail sent by Lenge, Willow Lane has essentially become a commuter parking lot with vehicles parked on both sides of the street, as well as within the intersection, causing a narrow road for other motorists.
“This along with the commuters crossing four lanes of traffic when dropped off at the bus stop on the southbound (side of Route 9) causes a danger to both the commuter and the motoring public,” Lenge wrote.
The ordinance that is now under consideration would prohibit parking on both sides of Willow Lane between Union Hill Road and Route 9 north. A second reading, public hearing and vote for adoption is expected to be held on the parking ordinance at the council’s Feb. 12 meeting.
