The Bordentown High School girls’ bowling team won its third straight South Jersey Group I title while competing this past Saturday at the Playdrome in Cherry Hill.
Bordentown finished with a score of 2,661, easily topping the 2,203 put up by the second place squad from Holy Cross.
“That was a pretty nice win,” noted Bordentown Coach Ron Jones. “That would have been good enough to win Group IV that day.”
Brittany Havens had a 213 game as part of her 578 series for Bordentown. Cathy Jones had a 229 in her 558 series. Chelsea Kohfeldt had a 220 game in a 541 series. Laura Sirak had a 203 game as part of her 527 series. Alaura Jones added a 457 series.
Bordentown is one of six Group I teams (two from each section) that have earned the right to bowl in the state finals on Monday at Carolier Lanes. The winner of the four groups will then face each other to determine an overall state champ.
“We’ve won the Group I championship before, but we haven’t been able to get past that next round,” noted Jones. “We’re hoping to get past that first round to get a chance to roll in the championship round.”
In regular season action this past week, Bordentown dominated New Egypt in both of its matches, finishing off its pursuit of another Freedom Division championship.
On Tuesday, Feb. 3, Bordentown defeated New Egypt, 4-0, with a total pin count of 2,671 to 1,956.
Bordentown had three girls with very similar series. Havens had a 569 series (221, 175 and 173), Sirak had a 565 series (213, 162 and 190) and Cathy Jones had a 564 series (179, 173 and 212). Kohfeldt added a 488 series (165, 159 and 164) and Alaura Jones had a 485 series (115, 210 and 160).
On Wednesday, Feb. 4, Bordentown also defeated New Egypt, 4-0. The final pin count in this match, held at Papp’s Lanes in Bordentown, was 2,436 to 2,017.
Havens had a 570 series (192, 190 and 188), Kohfeldt a 495 series (149, 165 and 181), Sirak a 473 series (158, 178 and 137), Cathy Jones a 458 series (158, 153 and 147) and Alaura Jones a 440 series (136, 149 and 155).

Jeremy Schaeffer came through with a fantastic 710 series that included games of 223, 267 and 220. Ryan McDonald a 601 series (245, 168 and 188), Matt Antozzeski a 573 series (188, 191 and 194), Travis Raynor a 565 series (177, 223 and 165), and Austin Alustiza a 535 series (154, 220 and 161) also bowled well for Bordentown.
Bordentown also defeated New Egypt, 4-0, on Wednesday, Feb. 4. The final pin count in that match was 2,667 to 2,439.
The win on Wednesday gave Bordentown a 7-1 record in the division and forced a tie with Maple Shade for the Freedom championship.
“That was nice to see because we have such a young team,” Jones said. “We only have one senior and the rest are sophomores.”
Schaeffer had a 593 series (192, 200 and 201), Raynor a 573 series (133, 234 and 206), Sean Congletown a 528 series (173, 209 and 146) McDonald a 510 series (168, 159 and 183) and Antozzeeski a 463 series (149, 149 and 165).
This Saturday, the Bordentown boys will compete in the South Jersey Group I sectionals at Deptford. The top two teams will advance on to the state finals.
“The boys have a definite shot,” Jones said. “They are definitely a possibility. I think that one of us (Maple Shade or Bordentown) will go on to the state tournament. We’re also capable of going one and two.”
Both of Bordentown’s teams were scheduled to take past in the Burlington County Open this past Tuesday.
