CENTRAL JERSEY: McKnight redistricting decision planned for April

By Sean Ruppert, Staff Writer
Schools Superintendent Ron Bolandi says he will recommend whether the Ethel McKnight Elementary School needs to be redistricted at the East Windsor Regional Board of Education’s April 27 meeting.
In an open letter to parents posted on the district’s Web site, Mr. Bolandi wrote the administration has not created a plan to redistrict the school, despite some rumors he had heard that one already had been developed.
“Just wanted to bring people up to speed on where we are with redistricting or where we aren’t really,” Mr. Bolandi said Tuesday. “There is no plan.”
The McKnight school’s enrollment stands at 772 kids, near its capacity, according to Mr. Bolandi’s letter. Three additional teachers recently were hired for the school to handle the increase in enrollment.
Grace N. Rogers Elementary School, however, has about 475 students and 10 to 15 empty classrooms, Mr. Bolandi reported in the summer.
Mr. Bolandi previously has said that 95 percent of the district’s students are in classrooms of about 20 students while McKnight’s have reached the mid-20s.
He also previously has said redistricting is the last thing the district wants to do, but it is something it must consider if enrollment at McKnight continues to increase.
Mr. Bolandi wrote in his open letter that the administration will review kindergarten registration and enrollment projections in March. He wrote parents will be notified before the April 27 meeting if a redistricting is going to be recommended.
